So, the word around the net is that today is the International Day of Happiness. The United Nations planned for this day for years and finally in 2013 declared March 20th International Day of Happiness, making today the 3rd anniversary of the holiday.
How precious. While some of us may have a cynical outlook on days like these, (holidays we feel might be "made up" or "dumb") I think it is important to look a little further beyond just the day itself. I don't believe the ultimate purpose of the International Day of Happiness is to actually be happy for that day, but more-so to acknowledge the concept of happiness and understand how achievable it is.
I know a lot of us may believe ourselves to have these dark souls and we oftentimes allow ourselves to become consumed in negative thought and hardship, but the thoughts we have do not have to be our reality. We do not have to allow money problems, material things and people to own us. When we can figure out what it looks like for ourselves, possession of the self will be beautiful. Be it close to you or far from you, beauty is all around and your mindset determines when, if and how you can see it.
Happiness has a lot more to do with your state of mind than it has to do with actual events in your life. I know I am one to talk because god knows I have my days but I think we can all take something away from the idea of a day like this, if nothing else. Tell your brothers and sisters to smile, today and every day. Look yourself in the mirror and smile. Strive for happiness and try to find it somewhere at least once in the day.
Be happy, love yourself, smile smile smile and stay lit.
